Letter writing: a vanishing skill? Two authorities on the epistolary art come to Manchester to rifle through the history of letters at this event bringing together two fascinating books on the subject. The author of 14 illuminating works of non-fiction including On The Map and Just My Type, Simon Garfield’s To The Letter explores what our correspondence reveals about our lives and how a single letter can change the course of history. It was described by the Sunday Times as ‘a rich cull of curiosities… remarkable.’ Following the runaway success of his eponymous website, Shaun Usher’s Letters of Note presents over one hundred of the world’s most entertaining, inspiring and unusual letters – including unforgettable letters from Katharine Hepburn, Iggy Pop, Bill Hicks and Groucho Marx – as well as the Queen’s personal recipe for scones. Stephen Fry called it ‘stupendous… my book of the year. You will never tire of it.’ Doors will be open from 5.30pm and drinks available.
