author Patricia Duncker

The eagerly anticipated new book from virtuoso writer Patricia Duncker, Sophie and the Sibyl spirits us away to 1870s Berlin in the company of George Eliot. Populated by characters and scenes from Eliot’s books and steeped in the tradition of the Victorian novel, it explores Darwinism, education for women, the role of the narrator and the thorny relationship between author and publisher.

Patricia is the author of five previous novels including Hallucinating Foucault (winner of the Dillons First Fiction Award and the McKitterick Prize) and Miss Webster and Cherif. Margaret Drabble called her writing ‘stylish, surprising, teasing, but above all grippingly readable’. The event will be hosted by Libby Tempest and is sponsored by Specsavers.
