At a time when sleek, richly produced costume dramas of nineteenth century Britain have captured the popular imagination, we head to the newly refurbished Elizabeth Gaskell's House for a festival edition of Manchester Salon. Join us as we explore Gaskell's novel North and South (1855), what it shows us about the dynamics of Britain's industrial revolution and what contemporary interest in it can tell us about society today. How should we be reading novels from different historical periods, and are we ultimately doomed to misread them? Guest speakers include Angelica Michelis, Alan Shelston, Helen Nugent and Vanessa Pupavac.
