THIS EVENT IS FULLY BOOKED

Elizabeth Gaskell’s 1848 novel, Mary Barton, was the first serious work to be set in Manchester, and it was sub-titled A Tale of Manchester Life. Yet it was published anonymously, as women writers were not then treated seriously. Mrs Gaskell – born in Chelsea and raised in Knutsford – worked in Manchester, teaching in a Sunday school, combating poverty and ignorance, and spreading the word about non-conformist Christianity, while devising fiendish literary plots. In this tour, Penguin author Ed Glinert visits her Manchester haunts, including the Royal Exchange, the Portico Library (please note there is no wheelchair access at this venue), and the site of the Fever Hospital, followed by a short bus trip to her first Manchester residence in Dover Street, Chorlton-on-Medlock. Finally, it is a short walk to the beautifully-restored Elizabeth Gaskell House on Plymouth Grove, where the tour will end.

Meet St Ann’s Church, St Ann’s Square. (Ends at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House, Plymouth Grove)
