MLF, St John’s Church, Young Identity and Cultureword present an evening of live literature, poetry and music to celebrate the life, work and legacy of James Baldwin. A pioneering figure in black history and civil rights, Baldwin wrote powerful novels, essays, plays and poetry that explored and shared profound insights into race, identity, masculinity and spirituality, as well as the black experience in America. A prolific writer and activist, his seminal books include Another Country, Notes of A Native Son and The Fire Next Time. At this special event, poets Jackie Kay, SuAndi, Isaiah Hull and Young Identity will pay tribute to the late writer, and Jamaican poet Kei Miller will perform new work inspired by Baldwin, commissioned by MLF, and sponsored by the Royal Literary Fund. The evening will be hosted by Shirley May, and is supported by the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Education Trust.
